Black Maternal Mortality is more than just a hashtag… it’s a call for social justice!

🤍As Black Maternal Health Week comes to a close, the urgency does not.The United States continues to face a maternal mortality crisis, one that disproportionately impacts Black women. Black women are nearly 3 times more likely to die from pregnancy-related causes, and more than 80% of these deaths are preventable.I had the opportunity to attend a powerful summit at the Newton White Mansion, where we grounded this conversation in both data and lived experience. Hearing directly from individuals impacted by complications like preeclampsia and pulmonary embolisms was a sobering reminder that these outcomes are not inevitable, they are the result of gaps in systems, access, and accountability.

I am proud to live and work in Prince George’s County, Maryland, a place where Black women lead, are heard, and are actively shaping the public health agenda.Huge appreciation to County Executive Aisha Braveboy and Dr. Diane J. Young, DrPH, MS, RN Young for their fearless leadership, all while showing up as phenomenal Black women. Representation at this level matters. The work ahead requires sustained commitment. Awareness is not enough.✨
